Fr. John Sanderson shares his insights on the value of investing in strong church systems

Churches and organisations are living and breathing. They do not remain static. In the same way, systems should not be static either.

After a while, a gap can emerge in the users’ knowledge and ability in utilising a system properly.

Sometimes updating the system fixes immediate problems.

Sometimes, users require upskilling and refreshers to get the most out of their current system.

Other times, a full system upgrade is required because it has become redundant.

There are many factors involved in selecting the right systems for your church or organisation.

Fr. John Sanderson is the vicar of St George’s East Ivanhoe. With his background in IT consultancy, John knows the benefit of investing in good systems.

Immediate pain points & future-proofing

It is tempting to always put a bandaid on a problem. But bandaids tend to come off very quickly. When you are looking to update or upgrade your system, it is worth spending time taking a step back to look at what your future needs will be. John shares how a longer term perspective and analysis will provide great benefit for years to come.

System rollout and getting buy-in from users

You find the best system. It is going to revolutionise your organisation and you can’t wait for everyone to use it. The more people involved, the more planning and time you will need to invest in having a successful implementation. John shares on how he finds out what drives users and what is required to gain a critical mass of positive engagement.

Getting the return on investment

New systems cost time and money. Finding the right system and setting it up takes time. Getting people trained up with a new system takes time. So is it really worth it? John shares how he reaps the benefit of the time invested in getting a new system.

Using the right tool for the right job

If you are going to build a fence, you need a hammer and nails. You would be wasting your time trying to build it with a teacup and saucer. John shares the importance of having the right tools for the right job.

Thank you John for sharing your time and wisdom so generously about the investment and benefits of having reliable and functional systems in your church. Check out the full interview below.
